Exodus 20:3-17 The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17)

1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. *Love God
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. *Love God
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. *Love God
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. *Love God
5. Honor thy father and thy mother. *Love God
6. Thou shalt not kill. *Love neighbor
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. *Love neighbor
8. Thou shalt not steal. *Love neighbor
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. *Love neighbor
10. Thou shalt not covet. *Love neighbor

The Two Great Commandments (Matthew 22:37 and 39 respectively)

1. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (Love God)
2. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Love neighbor)

Three of the Ten Commandments that are most commonly neglected by the world.

1. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
3. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

The world would be a more spiritual place if people obeyed these commandments that are most commonly neglected. People need to be very careful not to worship worldly possessions such as clothes, houses, automobiles, educational degrees, titles held by him or herself, money, etc. We need to worship God only and not worship worldly items. In today's world it is not difficult to find people saying Heavenly Father's name in vain. Television or movies is a great example of where this happens a lot. We need to be careful of what we watch either on TV or at the movies. Good and wholesome movies and TV shows should be our first choice when viewing for entertainment. For some people Sunday is just another day to get work done or make money. It should not be like this because it is the Lord's day and should be a day of spiritual uplifting. No physical labor should be done on Sunday and each of us need to be fed spiritually. To sum up, the world would be a more peaceful and tranquil place if more people heeded to these commandments.

Exodus 1-18

Exodus 14. Crossing the Red Sea.

Read Exodus 14:19-30 and1 Corinthians 10:1-4. Explain in writing how the children of Israel were symbolically saved by water and fire.

After reading and studying the scriptures I found in 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 that it talks about how the children of Israel were baptized by passing through the water in the Red Sea. Everyone must be baptized in order to return to our Heavenly Father; therefore He made it possible for the children of Israel to return to Him. In Corinthians it is written that the pillar was a way that the Lord baptized his people by fire. I believe strongly that by symbolically baptizing the children of Israel that God was saving them with the water and fire. To truly be clean and create the baptismal covenant you must be born of water and fire, this was Heavenly Father's way to truly make a new life and heritage for the children of Israel. With baptism of fire they now have the holy ghost with them. The children of Israel were "baptized" with the water and "received the Holy Ghost" with the burning sensation of fire.

Genesis 24-50

Choice 3: Genesis 29-30, 35, 37, 39-41. Joseph Endured His Trials.

a) Read the chapter summaries for Genesis 29-30, 35. List the birth order of Jacob's 12 sons.

Answer: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin.

b) Read Genesis 37:1-11 and the Student Institute Manual commentary for Genesis 37:3, "What Was the Coat of Many Colors?" (pg. 93) Write an explanation of possible reasons Joseph's brothers were envious of him.

Answer: Joseph had a dream that he would have dominion over his brothers. This made his brothers upset because Joseph was the second to youngest and they didn't believe that Joseph should reign over them. Joseph received a coat of many colors when he was 17 years old and this made his brothers very jealous because of the high quality of the coat and they had never received such a great gift like Joseph did.

c) List the challenges in Genesis 37 that Joseph faced. How do you think Joseph felt about his challenges. How are Joseph's challenges like the ones young people face today?

Answer: Joseph faced hatred and jealousy from his brothers because of their father's favoritism towards him. He faced being the outsider with his brothers because they did not want include him. I think Joseph felt that his challenges were really tough and he didn't quite understand at the time why he had these challenges. Joseph's challenges are like the ones young people face today in that there is still jealousy and hatred towards siblings in today's world.

d) Read Genesis 39:2-3, 21, 23, and find a phrase that is similar in all four verses. Then answer the following questions:
   1) What did Joseph do in Genesis 39 that allowed the phrase in verses 2-3 to still be true in verses 21, 23? When do you think that Joseph made the commitment be morally clean?
   2) Give examples for Genesis 40-41 and the Institute Student Manual commentary for Genesis 39:21-23; 40:1-23 (pg. 95) that illustrate how the Lord remained with Joseph.
   3) Write two or three paragraphs listing the lessons you learned from the life of Joseph. What can you learn from Joseph about turning bad experiences and circumstances into good ones.

Answer: "The Lord was with him (Joseph)". 1) He made the best of the situation and did not complain. When Potiphar's wife tempts him to lie with her is the time when I think Joseph made the commitment to be morally clean. 2) Joseph has the ability to interpret dreams and he acknowledges that it is not possible without God.
3) The lessons that I learned from the life of Joseph are that when I am placed in a bad situation then I need to make the most of it and not complain and the other lesson is that I need to acknowledge God in all that He does in my life. Joseph is a fantastic example of how we should be when trials and tribulations come our way. He never complained and just did his very best in the bad situation.
Giving credit to Heavenly Father for all that He does in our lives is the proper thing to do in order to show respect for Him. It is easy to sometimes forget about God and become proud. Pride is not recognizing God and thinking that you can accomplish anything without God. This way of thinking will never get you ahead and is definitely not a good choice. Getting back to Heavenly Father requires us to be humble, meek, and forgiving.

Genesis 12-23

Joseph Smith Translation of Genesis 14:25-40; Alma 13:14-19; Doctrine and Covenants 84:14, 107:1-4; and the Institute Student Manual commentary for Genesis 14:18, "Who Was Melchizedek?" (pg. 67-68).

Question: Who was Melchizedek?

Answer: After reading all of these scriptures pertaining to Melchizedek I believe he was a king of peace and righteousness. He was a man of faith who truly believed in righteousness. Abraham paid tithes (one-tenth of income) to Melchizedek. Melchizedek was king over Salem and these people in Salem were full of iniquity, abominations, and wickedness. He attempted to preach repentance unto his people, but they did not listen nor repent.

Abraham received his priesthood from Melchizedek (D&C 84:14). The most high priesthood was named after Melchizedek to avoid repetition of "Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God". Melchizedek was a great high priest and that is why is highest priesthood is named after him. When Melchizedek was a child he feared God and stopped the mouths of lions and quenched the violence of fire. Now I have a better understanding of why the highest priesthood is called the Melchizedek priesthood.
