Genesis 11:1-9. A Tower to Reach Heaven
1. What was the stated purpose of building the tower?
A: The stated purpose of building the tower was to be able to reach heaven.
2. Why do you think this angered the Lord?
A: I think this angered the Lord because it was blasphemous and mocked Him. Heaven is not reachable by building a high tower. It is only reachable by following Jesus Christ.
3. What did God do to scatter the people?
A: God made multiple languages and thus they could not communicate with one another anymore.
4. Read Ether 1:33-43 and summarize in writing how the Jaredites from the Book of Mormon fit into this story.
A: In these verses Jared came forth with his brother and their families along with some others and their families, from the great tower, at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people. Jared prays unto the Lord that He will not make communication between everyone impossible. The Lord had compassion unto Jared and does not make multiple languages. Jared asks the Lord where they should go. The Lord responds by saying, "Go at the head of them down into the valley which is northward". This story of the Jaredites is related to Genesis 11:1-9 in that they built a great tower, but they began to understand that this is not the proper way to reach heaven and pray unto the Lord for compassion and answers to what to do.
5. Read Acts 4:12, Mosiah 3:17, 5:7-15, and Doctrine and Covenants 18:21-25, and write two to three paragraphs about how we can receive "a name" (Genesis 11:4) that will truly help us reach heaven.
A: We can receive "a name" that will truly help us reach heaven by being baptized and taking upon the name of Jesus Christ. For Jesus Christ is the only way to reach heaven. We need to follow the examples of Jesus Christ and try our very best to be Christ-like while here on earth. Repentance is also a key component to help us reach heaven. We need to constantly repent of our sins which means to own up to our sins, change our ways, and not to repeat those same sins.
Once we get baptized then we need to keep our baptismal covenant and remember that we have taken the name of Jesus Christ upon us. We need to be obedient throughout our entire lives in order to be at the right hand of God (Mosiah 5:9). If we are not obedient then we will be found at the left hand of God (Mosiah 5:10). Performing good works while being steadfast and immovable is also how we can be helped to reach heaven.
